Delaware rules

Yard waste is banned from Delaware landfills

In Delaware, branches, leaves and grass clippings can’t be thrown out with the trash. They’re banned from every landfill in the state and have to go to a composting or mulching facility instead.

Around Wilmington, that means places like the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s composting site on Hay Road or Holland Mulch in Edgemoor. They only take loose yard waste, never mixed with trash. That’s why we sort every yard job: green waste goes to be mulched, and fencing, playsets and other junk go their own way.

  1. Pile it or bag itHowever it’s easiest for you. We load loose piles, paper bags, plastic bags or bundles.
  2. Keep the junk separate if you canGreen waste in one pile, everything else in another. If not, we sort it as we load.
  3. We load and rakeWe pick up the pile and rake up what’s left on the grass or the driveway.
  4. Mulched, not buriedGreen waste goes to a mulching or composting site, where it gets turned into mulch and compost.

What yard waste removal costs in Wilmington

We price by how much room it takes in our truck. Composting sites charge drop-off fees too, and those are built into the all-in price you get on site before we load.

What moves the price: volume, how far we carry it from the back of the yard to the truck, and big logs or stumps, which are heavy.

Through the year

When Wilmington yards need us

Yard waste comes in waves around here, and each season brings its own pile.

Spring

Winter storm damage, overgrown shrubs and the first big cleanup. Old fencing and playsets come down before the new ones go up.

Fall

Leaves from the oaks, maples and sycamores that line Wilmington’s older streets, plus the end-of-season garden cleanup.

After storms

Summer thunderstorms and nor’easters bring limbs down on yards, fences and driveways. We clear what’s on the ground.

Who calls us

Homeowners, landlords and property managers

Homeowners who did the work. You spent the weekend trimming and pruning. The pile is too big for the car and the trash can won’t take it. That’s the easy part for us.

Older homeowners. Raking is one thing, dragging bags and branches to the curb is another. We do the heavy part.

Landlords and HOAs. Overgrown lots and neglected backyards between tenants get cleared in one visit.

After the tree service. Some tree companies leave the brush behind to keep their price down. We pick up what they left.

FAQ

Yard waste removal questions

How much does yard waste removal cost in Wilmington, DE?

Most yard waste jobs run $150 to $400, depending on how much there is and how far we carry it. A small brush pile or a dozen bags of leaves can come in around $75 to $150. Storm cleanups with big limbs and downed trees are quoted on site.

Why can’t yard waste just go in the trash?

Yard waste is banned from all Delaware landfills. Branches, leaves and grass clippings have to go to a composting or mulching facility instead. We sort yard waste separately from other junk and take it to the right place.

Do I need to bag the leaves?

Bag them if it’s easier for you, or leave them in a pile and we’ll load them. Composting facilities only accept loose yard waste, so we empty the bags on site there. Paper yard bags or plastic, it doesn’t matter to us.

Do you cut down trees?

No, we’re not a tree service. We haul what’s already on the ground: branches, limbs, brush, logs that have been cut to a size we can lift. For a standing tree, call an arborist first, then call us for whatever they leave behind.

Can you take old fencing, a playset or a shed?

Yes. Old fence panels, a broken swing set, a trampoline, a rotted shed or a pile of landscape timbers all go with the job. Those are sorted out from the green waste since they can’t go to the compost site.

Do you do storm cleanups?

Yes. After a nor’easter or a summer storm, we clear downed limbs and debris from yards across New Castle County. Call as soon as you can, those weeks fill up fast.
