Refrigerant, handled right

Why a fridge can’t just go to the dump

Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units and dehumidifiers all carry refrigerant. Federal rules require it to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped, because it’s harmful when it leaks into the air.

Here in New Castle County, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority arranges for refrigerant removal on appliances brought to its Cherry Island Landfill in Wilmington. Every cooling appliance we pick up goes where that recovery happens. None of it gets dumped in a ditch or left at a curb.

After pickup

Where old appliances end up

An appliance is mostly steel, copper and aluminum. That’s why so little of what we pick up ever needs to be landfilled.

Recycled for metal

Washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and water heaters go to scrap metal recycling.

Refrigerant recovered

Fridges, freezers, AC units and dehumidifiers go where the refrigerant is recovered before the metal is processed.

Donated when it works

Clean, working appliances in good shape can be set aside for donation instead of the scrap pile.

When people call us

New appliance coming, old one still in the way

The store won’t haul it. Not every retailer takes the old unit, some charge extra, and many won’t carry it up from a basement. We clear it before or after the delivery.

Kitchen or laundry remodel. The contractor is ripping out cabinets and the old appliances are sitting in the driveway. We haul them along with the rest of the debris.

The basement graveyard. A lot of Wilmington basements have a second fridge or a dead freezer that’s been there for years. We get it up the stairs and gone.

Rentals and turnovers. Landlords replacing a unit between tenants call us so the new one goes in the same day the old one comes out.

FAQ

Appliance removal questions

How much does refrigerator removal cost in Wilmington, DE?

Hauling away a single refrigerator, washer or dryer typically runs $75 to $150. Where it lands in that range depends on size, weight and the carry: a side-by-side fridge coming up from a basement takes more work than a compact one sitting in the garage.

Do I need to empty and defrost the fridge first?

Please empty it, and if you can, unplug it the day before so the freezer drains. Put a towel underneath. Food left inside makes the unit heavier and messier to carry, and we’d rather not track melting ice through your kitchen.

Can you disconnect my gas stove or gas dryer?

No, and nobody without the right license should. A gas line needs to be shut off and capped by a licensed plumber or your gas utility. Once that’s done, we unplug, slide it out and haul it. Electric units and standard washer hoses we unhook ourselves.

Will the city pick up my old refrigerator?

Wilmington’s 311 special pick-up accepts appliances at the curb, and the city requires refrigerator doors to be removed first. If you’d rather not take doors off and drag a fridge to the street, we carry it out from wherever it sits.

Do you haul away water heaters?

Yes. Tank water heaters are heavy, and a full one is far heavier, so it needs to be disconnected and drained before we come. Have your plumber leave the old one in place and we’ll take it from there.

What happens to the appliances you pick up?

Almost everything in an appliance is metal, so most of it goes to scrap recycling. Refrigerators, freezers, AC units and dehumidifiers go where their refrigerant can be removed properly first. Working units in good shape can go to donation.
